What does your clothing style say about you

Jul 16, 2023 / Fashion

Have you ever thought about why a person dresses up nicely for a date? Why not each day? The answer is quite simple, to impress the date. This shows that our dressing style has a crucial impact on our personality and impression making. It matters. But, the other question is what does our clothing style tells the other person? Or what your clothing style says about your personality?

The Human mind is a strange machine with a complete ocean of thinking, perceiving, and judging patterns to understand. To date, the clothing style in a broader term, defines your income, your fashion sense, your spending habits, and other traits of your personality if you’re a male. If you are a female, it defines your attractiveness, your social class, and even the level of literacy for both genders. These are not mere assumptions rather these are experimental facts by psychologists.

Do we dress to impress?

According to psychologists, what your clothes say about your personality is irrespective of what a person intends in actuality; the basic reason to dress properly, or wear good clothes is to make an impression on the opposite gender. This has been proved by many studies and experiments. So, whatever you might say or give explanations for your clothing style, or clothing patterns, the main agenda of this whole system to get the opposite gender attracted towards you.

Let me give you an example:

In a restaurant, a waitress was asked to wear an attractive and catchy red top instead of the white shirt which all of the other waitresses were wearing. When she experimented, she went to serve men only. She was given a higher tip by many customers as compared to the normal days. She was also asked to try the same thing for the female customers but she couldn’t get a higher tip from the female customers. This made it clear and obvious that the female customers were not attracted by the red top of the waitress while almost all the male customers were attracted by her dress and gave a higher tip in return to make an impression.

This proves that the whole mindset revolves around impressing the opposite gender.

And this also proves that it is not just women who are conscious about their dressing sense, dressing styles, and patterns. Men too, are conscious of their dressing style and make proper efforts to dress well to attract the opposite gender whether it’s a date or just a casual walk in the street. So, this dressing style and dressing consciousness trait being attached to the female gender is a false hypothesis.

Does clothing reflect personality?

Certain dressing patterns give a certain impression normally perceived by humans regardless of the perceptions being correct or not. Following are some examples:

Dressing Style

Joggers or Sports Shoes

If you’re someone who normally wears joggers or sport shoes casually, it is very obvious that it will be perceived that you are a sportsperson or you’re someone who does not like to be formal. This does not imply that these judgments are always correct.

Skintight Jeans

If you are someone who’s wearing Jeans all the time, you’re going to be perceived as some with a hard personality type who usually does not like to be relaxed or comfortable, rather tends to be rigid and rough. But if you’re wearing skin-tight jeans, you are most probably being classified as a gym guy or someone who’s attached to the latest fashions.

Ripped jeans

People wearing Ripped jeans are normally classified as modern, up to date but causal with no formalities and open people. Someone wearing ripped jeans with a t-shirt is never being judged for an office guy, entrepreneur, or a formal person.

Suit (Pant Coat)

People wearing suits are classified psychologically as being the most formal ones; those working in a formal workplace, the CEO of a Company, some executive or an official. Someone wearing a suit can’t generally be classified as working in a radio station or a restaurant. Also, people wearing suits are easily perceived to be wealthy enough because poor or middle-class people won’t normally wear a suit

Bikini

Women wearing bikini are always judged to be open, expressive, and stylish. One usually can’t expect women wearing a bikini to be strict about rules and stuff.  It makes no sense. This shows what your sense of style says about you.

Light vs. Dark Colors

  • People wearing light colors with simple or no design are often been thought of as introverts and those who wear dark colors with designing are thought of been extroverts
  • Similarly, people wearing light color are classified as having simple straightforward personality while people wearing dark and designed clothes are being assumed to have a dynamic personality type
  • Light colors are always a symbol of peace and people wearing them are judged as peacemakers while people wearing dark colors are thought to be aggressive.
  • Individuals wearing light colors are thought to be money savers while ones wearing dark colors are thought to be spenders.

Conclusion:

This article explained what your sense of style says about you and this will help you in knowing how to dress according to your personality. From the references of the experiments and the psychological facts provided to you, you now have an idea of what clothing style does or dressing style tells about a person or his personality.
